CHIKA: going behind the bars

'CHIKA' being performed in Melbourne 2005
'CHIKA' being performed in Melbourne 2005

A documentary of loneliness, imprisonment and artistic expression, CHIKA will feature at the Performance Space in Eveleigh from March 5-8. Sydney-based photographer/artist Mayu Kanamori, along with other locally based Japanese artists, will present the haunting tale of Japanese tourist Chika Honda.
Chika was one of five Japanese tourists allegedly carrying heroin upon their arrival in Melbourne in 1992. All five were found guilty and sentenced to 15 years at a Melbourne prison. Through photographs, interviews, documentary footage, original music and other artistic expression, the performance delivers the story of Chika, the sole female prisoner. Released after 10 years for good behaviour, Chika felt that inaccuracies in the translation of her court testimony ultimately affected her fate.
CHIKA blends journalism with theatre and ends with a medley of voices belonging to Chika and her loved ones followed by Kanamori's final narrative.
