After the planting of 699,999 trees, dignitaries paused on
September 18 to pay tribute to technology company NEC Australia.
In a September 18 ceremony staged on Kangaroo Island, southwest
of Adelaide, company officials planted the 700,000th tree as
part of NEC's worldwide afforestation program. The event, which
followed an inspection of the NEC Forest with company executives
Ryosuke Ugo, Toshiharu Iwasa, South Australia Premier Mike
Rann and Kangaroo Island Mayor Jayne Bates, represents a fraction
of NEC's global commitment to afforestation. The corporate
responsibility initiative was launched in 2002 and aims to
absorb 1 million tonnes of CO2 over 20 years. By 2010, NEC
expects the program to cancel out its global CO2 emissions.
NEC Australia was applauded by the South Australian Government
for its environmental contribution, as well as for being the
largest business partner to the state in providing IT technologies,
products and employment opportunities.
