Professor Royall Tyler |
Bringing classic Japanese drama to a new audience has earned
Canberra resident and former Australian National University
Professor Royall Tyler The Japan Foundation Award. The foundation
promotes cultural exchange worldwide and its awards were
established in 1973 to recognise individuals and organisations
that have made outstanding achievements to the understanding
of Japanese culture, literature and the arts in foreign countries.
Through his translations and publications, Tyler introduced
non-Japanese people to traditional Japanese Noh plays. His
translation of the 11th century novel The Tale of Genji,
completed in 2001, was also recognised by the foundation
as an exceptional contribution to cultural exchange. A selection
panel chose Tyler from 110 nominees and he was presented
with his award in Tokyo on October 3, where he paid tribute
to past recipients.
