Antares Boyle

Like Listening to the Wind

Treat yourself to a night of captivating solo flute compositions by some of Japan's greatest composers on August 24 at the Japan Foundation, Sydney. Featuring flautist Antares Boyle, the concert will showcase diverse contemporary works by internationally renowned composers, including Toru Takemitsu, Toshio Hosokawa and Joji Yuasa.

Showcasing her inspiring talent and zeal, Like Listening to the Wind will be Boyle's colourful interpretation of when dreams and passion meet the land of the rising sun.

Support for new visual artists

The Japan Foundation, Sydney is making a last call for submissions for its new visual arts grant program. The foundation is seeking new and emerging visual artists (fine art, craft, film-making and new media) whose work is strongly influenced by Japan.

Successful applicants will produce their own exhibition or event, either solo or in a group, as part of a collective art project to be launched at the Japan Foundation in February, 2008.

Japanese cinema comedy season

Free public screenings of Japanese movies, from traditional classics to modern cult films, are held every second Wednesday from 6.30pm in the Japan Foundation Multipurpose Room, Sydney.

In coming months, the foundation is featuring a selection of films by Shinobu Yaguchi. A young master of comedy, Yaguchi has directed a string of popular hits including Swing Girls, which proved a highlight of last year's Japanese Film Festival.

My Secret Cache (August 8)
Sakiko has an unusual infatuation with money. When a bank robbery occurs, she finds herself taken hostage before the robbers encounter an unfortunate turn of events. Consumed by her desire to find the stolen money, Sakiko sets out on a dangerous mission to retrieve the loot..

Adrenaline Drive (August 22)
When a gas leak explodes at a Yakuza clan's headquarters, fate steps in to bring a shy and timid nurse, Shizuko, together with a meek and indecisive car rental clerk, Suzuki. The pair savour their first real taste of life and love as they run away together - with the clan hot on their heels.

Water Boys (September 5)
The school swim team is in danger of pulling out of competition due to a lack of new members. Recently appointed coach Sakuma sets out to train the team in synchronised swimming. Five persistent young men remain, in the hope of saving their team.

Swing Girls (19th September)
A group of high school girls are stuck in a remedial maths class for the summer. Through sheer boredom they decide to form a brass band as a way out of the uninspiring lessons. The girls embark on a wild adventure of musical fun - all to the addictive beat of that big brass swing!

This year marks the 11th annual Japanese Film Festival, set for late November at Greater Union Cinemas, George St, Sydney. Stay tuned for more details.

Japanese Pottery: The Rising Generation from Traditional Japanese Kilns

Part of a worldwide travelling exhibition, Japanese Pottery: The Rising Generation from Traditional Japanese Kilns introduces the works of 35 selected artists considered to be Japan's future elite of ceramic arts.

Focusing on the theme "vessels", the exhibition will feature 71 pieces of innovative ceramic works on display at the Japan Foundation Gallery, Sydney from October 9-26. In keeping to the traditional methods of their predecessors, each work is an interpretation of the artist's appreciation of the vessel, expressed in individualistic forms.

Japanese Pottery: The Rising Generation from Traditional Japanese Kilns begins its Australian tour in Melbourne in September, followed by Sydney in October, Perth in November and Brisbane in December.
