The 62 crewmates of Japan's Antarctic icebreaker Shirase hosted an onboard reception party during the vessel's recent Sydney stopover, welcoming locals and Japanese people living in Australia. After a successful four-month voyage, the Shirase was headed for home.

The wife of the Japanese ambassador, Madame Emiko Ueda, gave an Ikebana demonstration in an event hosted by the Ikebana International Sydney Chapter 36 Inc. Using Japanese and Australian flowers, five arrangements were created evoking the coming of autumn as well as bold tropical style displays. The creations were later divided into small bouquets and given to visitors.
