Women in Japan are no strangers to dressing for wet weather. Each year Japan experiences an average 1800mm of rain, most during the wet season of June and July. For fashion-conscious women, rain is no excuse to neglect style. Wet weather gear in Japan is both trendy and practical and many stores specialise in stylish rain gear. Many Japanese brands include chic and elegant rain jackets to replace the boring and shapeless ones of old. And far from being dull and unfashionable, the practical rain boot has evolved into the trendiest footwear. From cute to glamorous, patterned or plain, with even high-heel and wedge versions available, rain boots are being worn for both work and play. To stand out from the crowd, women also carry fashionable umbrellas featuring patterns or bright colours. On warmer days, cropped denim and short skirts are popular for women wanting to both look good and stay dry.
Here in Australia, famous for its sunshine, it's tempting to stay inside when the grey clouds appear. But the next time it rains, follow the Japanese example and don't let it dampen your spirits or your sense of style.
